The main reason we choose to work at a startup is because it promises freedom and rapid advancement to its employees. After working there for some time, you know you are a self leader, but you may know where to start. For those who feel lost in a startup, welcome to your article.   “If you really love what you’re doing and believe in the business, you will always find a way so be patient and keep looking for ways to solve problems,” Caitlyn Choi, head of HR, Buzzvil, mobile lockscreen media platform provider, said. You see a lot of influencers on the internet that ‘teaches’ you how to nail social media marketing, among other skill sets. But when you’re at the starting line, you will not be able to really relate to what they are saying because there is no single law that fits all businesses and that’s okay. The moment will come when it all makes sense after you spend a lot of time on understanding your product, market and audience. Be a team player, dive in and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. “Signing a deal with a partner can take months or even years. You have to reach out to the right company and the right people in it which will take a lot of time and effort,” she added. “A company may get back to you years later. You never know what will happen so you have to stay strong and persevere. Only then you can grow.” The key is to be consistent and not give up. Someone who matters will eventually notice you and you will climb up that ladder to success. You should know: the world is a small place. On top of that, you have to keep in mind that to take the long run, money shouldn’t be the only fuel to your engine. “Know what’s more important than how much you make,” she said. “The moment you believe that how much you make is the only indicator of your worth, you will walk on a shaky road.” What’s worse than being a person who gets pay way more than he deserves and has nowhere else to go? Imagine the damage he will bring to the company and himself. This person will break teamwork and attempt to take credit from his colleagues. It will be a life controlled by the company he works for. “There is no shortcut to success. When you choose a job, you have to take into consideration how much you can grow and enjoy what you are doing,” she added. “Only after you are good at something and in control, you have to brainstorm on how you will be paid the amount you deserve.” If someone loses control of his life, he will not be able to experiment what he is capable of. Working at a big corporation and bringing in the big bucks could be a stable road. But if you look at it in the long run, it’s not the only road. Working at a startup can be your ticket to try out new careers and reinvent yourself. We say that life is short often. But it really isn’t. For the last two centuries, life expectancy has increased by three years every decade. We have more time in our hands to work longer. We have to take this chance to try out new things and see what we’re good at, what makes us different and what we like to do. As London Business School’s Lynda Gratton says we will live to a 100 so we have to learn to be “younger for longer.”
