[Buzzvil People] Samuel Kwon, Sales Manager

Buzzvil People took the opportunity to introduce each Buzzvillians with a variety of backgrounds, personality, and thoughts. If you are wondering how best colleagues in Buzzvil are gathering to create the best team, if you are curious about each of the colorful Buzzvillians, please pay attention to Buzzvil People.

1. Please give us a quick introduction of yourself.

Hi, I’m Samuel from the Buzzvil sales team. My Korean name is Kihyun Kwon, but within Buzzvil people call me Sam. I’m in my third year of marriage, father of two-year-old toddler Junhyuk, and the older brother among two. I’m the second-to-last youngest in the Buzzvil sales team, and also among the top 3 according to body weight. I’ve worked at agencies, representatives, advertisers, and media agencies like Buzzvil, but looking back, I’ve pursued a single career path, digital marketing. Everybody has multiple roles in their lives, but my happiest one of late is being ‘Junhyuk’s Daddy’, one that gives me joy and responsibility and above all, growth. I am thankful to my wife, the most beautiful woman in the world (really), for giving me this lovely, wonderful child as well as the happiest moments of my life. The year 2018 is the tenth year I spend working, and my third time living the Year of the Dog. I should probably become a more mature and responsible person.

2. What brings you to Buzzvil?

To be completely honest, when I worked at a media rep I had heard of the HoneyScreen operated by Buzzvil but not Buzzvil itself. I had been thinking of a media agency as my next career but none had captured my attention yet, so I was thinking of a long run before changing jobs. Then a headhunter approached me with a proposal from Buzzvil. I wasn’t that attracted at first sight, thinking that Buzzvil would merely be a second mover to NBT, which also operates a cash slide. But the more I looked into it, the more appealing Buzzvil’s strong points seemed to me. It had a lot of ideals for me – a young organization, and a growing, non-hierarchical, and challenging one. Buzzvil emphasized the quixotic mind as its core inspiration, which seemed like a call of destiny to me, since I had always appreciated the Don Quixote state of mind even before working here. Buzzvil wouldn’t leave my thoughts, so eventually I had to apply.

To dream the impossible dream,

To love the unachievable love,

To fight the unbeatable foe,

To bear with unbearable pain,

To reach the unreachable star in the sky.

-         Don Quixote

A company with a state of mind like this was not something that I would regret, and changing jobs did turn out to be one of the good things I did in my life. Of course, as a sales manager, I did have my doubts whether the value of BuzzScreen would truly be beneficial to the advertiser. But I agreed strongly with Buzzvil’s value as a lockscreen platform and the orientation of a personal mobile first-screen medium, which led me to join Buzzvil.

3. What is your role at Buzzvil?

I work as a sales manager in the Buzzvil ad operation and sales team. My main job is to maneuver the pipelines between advertiser/agency/rep for the smooth process of product introduction, planning, and proposals. The purpose is the maximization of Buzzvil’s sales, but ultimately the success of our advertisers or ad campaigns lead to Buzzvil’s success, so I make an effort for their success and the virtuous circle of sales. Finding new customers and continuously satisfying existing customers is tricky, like gaining your balance on a bike. Speaking of which, Buzzvil provides an excellent environment for a sales manager to do just that. While not being widely known, it also provides a differentiated value from existing mobile media. You might wonder why not being widely known would be beneficial for a sales manager. Actually, a big factor in my working with sales was watching the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ starring Will Smith. I normally enjoy hearing quotes, but this movie in particular made my heart pound and the whole thing felt like a huge beautiful quote in itself. I think that was when I fell in love with sales. During college I dreamt of working in finance, but this movie turned me around to sales and I’ve never regretted it since. Personally, I think the two major merits of sales is that 1) It provides an endless challenge, and 2) It’s a win-win for everyone.

4. How does it feel to work at a startup? or advertising industry?

The best advantages of working at a start-up company are a young and active organization, the feeling that though the work is hard, the company grows with me, and a work environment that allows active work. It is possible to focus purely on work and avoid unnecessary work politics or my boss. It might seem like a natural thing, but to me it’s a great asset. To me, a person with a strong desire to learn, a culture that does not consider rank or class, and that respects each other with no discrimination in work is a great stimulative and impetus. My thoughts from working in the advertising field for 10 years is that the field itself is always developing and advancing. This feeling of always running toward something better is so satisfying to a person with natural curiosity like me. I’ve been with many companies, but the hardest and also most interesting is Buzzvil. That’s the real merit of start-ups.

5. Is there something that you can say “this is the best part being Buzzvillians”?

I don’t think sales has an answer. Everyone has their own tastes and strong points. That means a uniform style of management or micromanaging is completely unneeded, and Buzzvil really does not have any micromanaging. Sometimes the fact that I decide all of this on my own scares me. Buzzvil does not scold failures but instead always believes in you and provides diverse new opportunities. It was a little hard to adjust at first, because Buzzvil was so different. But lately, the Buzzvil sales team culture makes me work harder in order to preserve this culture. Secondly, the Buzzvilians. The people here are truly awesome – where did they all come from? They’re all experienced workers with diverse personalities and advantages, providing a stimulating environment every day. Simon, John, Jarrod, Peter, and Juicy, they all learn from each other and exchange positive influence, all the while fiercely growing together. That’s what’s great about Buzzvil.

6. Do you have a personal goal or dream? If so, how does your experience at Buzzvil help you?

My personal tendency, I think, is sort of an idealist. I dream of a world where everyone is happy. The more I get paid and the higher my status climbs, I try not to be satisfied with that but live with more responsibility and intensity. But life, as it is, has more parts that are inexplicable than explicable, and the existence of the needy is ineluctable. So I try to keep my ideals but also look down toward reality. I wish to contribute to a world where not only I am happy, but my family, team, company, society, and country is happy. Buzzvil is such an amazing place with amazing people. The culture and experience here will be a huge foundation for achieving my ideals whether I stay with Buzzvil or later decide to start my own company. With the handsome and excellent-working people here, and gathering together voluntarily on holidays or even January 1st, Buzzvil is definitely the first!
